Newlyweds sit with newlyweds. Young families sit together. The couples married forty years sit at the back. Every congregation does this, nobody plans it, and it quietly costs you the one thing a community is for. Six moving parts fix it for an evening.
A single box at registration
Couples say how long they have been married: 0–10 years, 11–20, 21–30, or 31 and up. That one field runs the entire evening.
Tables of eight, four brackets each
Every table seats one couple from each bracket. A couple married three years spends the night with a couple married thirty-five, and neither of them chose the other.
The spreadsheet does the seating
Type in registrations and table numbers appear. It also tells you which bracket is short and by how many — that is your recruiting list.
Nine questions on the table
An envelope in the center, opened course by course. Three light ones with the appetizer, three deeper with the entrée, three for laughs and legacy with dessert.
The veterans host
The couple married longest reads the first card and answers it first. Every table where that happens goes well. Every table that waits for a volunteer starts slow.
One photo per table
Emailed the following week. That photograph is next year's promotion, and it costs you nothing.

Three rooms full of men
The first is a Fishers of Men group I have facilitated for seventeen years. That room taught me that men will say almost anything to each other once somebody else goes first — and that a good question does more work than a good speaker.
The second is Cursillo. That room taught me that formation happens at a table, over a meal, inside a fixed span of time, with a method underneath it that nobody ever has to see working.
The third is my Knights of Columbus council. That room taught me that a good idea is worth nothing without men who will show up at six in the morning to set chairs and stay late to mop the floor.
Dinner for Decades is those three things put together. And then it does the one thing none of them do on their own: it brings our wives to the table with us.
